First: your panels are still working
The PVS6 is the reporting box, not part of the power path. When it dies, your microinverters carry on converting and your house carries on being fed. Nothing about a dead gateway stops the array producing.
What you have actually lost is visibility — production history, per-panel output, and the ability to notice a failing panel. Real, but a different problem from "my solar is down", and worth separating before spending money.
Confirm it's the gateway before you buy anything
- Check it has power. No lights at all usually means a power problem — the breaker it sits on, or its supply — rather than a dead unit.
- Check your meter mid-day. On a clear afternoon a working array pushes the meter toward or past zero. If it does, your panels are producing and only the gateway is at fault.
- Compare your utility's net usage against the same month last year. Roughly flat means the array is still doing its job.
If all three point the same way — panels producing, gateway unresponsive — it really is the gateway, and the options below apply.
The options, honestly
1. Do nothing
Genuinely worth considering, and rarely mentioned. Your system keeps generating. You lose per-panel visibility and fault detection, and you keep the free sanity checks — meter, bill, year-over-year usage.
If the array is old, or you may not be in the house long, this can be the right answer rather than the lazy one.
2. A used PVS6
They turn up regularly on eBay. Things to know before you bid: units are usually pulls from decommissioned systems and arrive associated with someone else's installation; getting your own microinverters onto a replacement gateway is a commissioning exercise, not a plug-in swap; and about half of anything listed as "parts or repair" arrives non-functional.
If you go this route, buy from a seller who confirms it powers up and takes returns, and expect setup work rather than a swap.
3. Pay Enphase to replace the gateway
Enphase — who made the microinverters on most SunPower roofs — will restore monitoring by sending a technician to swap the SunPower gateway for an Enphase one. It is the most hands-off route and it puts you on a platform with a company behind it.
Weigh it on cost and access: it is a paid service call with hardware and an installer visit, so it is the most expensive option by some distance, and you need to be home. $999 as of August 2026 — confirm current pricing with Enphase directly. Not available for SunVault battery systems, which Enphase's monitoring-restoration service explicitly excludes.
4. Replace the whole system
Occasionally the right call for a very old array, but do the arithmetic before being talked into it. Twenty years on from your original permission to operate, you will likely be moved to a less favourable net-metering arrangement, which can change the economics substantially. That is a bigger decision than restoring monitoring, and it deserves its own analysis.
